Buckle up this is a long one...The 1871 Project got started back in 2016 right in the heart of the Magic City. I had just lost my very first design job at an app development company. I had always had a real passion for hand-lettering and decided to see what I could actually do with that skill. What started as a side project for me to explore and to create freely quickly grew into a small business. I started with apparel because I really wanted to try out screen-printing and see where that would take me. The process of designing things for 1871 birthed into font design and making commercial typefaces for myself and other designers.
Handlettering and Fonts
When I first started making fonts I had no idea what I was doing, as i can imagine anyone starting out would. I knew hand-lettering and how to draw letters but no clue on font design. I've always loved learning and getting your first alphabet into something fully functional is so satisfying. I developed a passion for using the pen tool back in the beginning of my design career. That transferred really well over to drawing letters and making custom type. I drew a few alphabets in illustrator but never really had any idea what it would actually take to get the letters into something I could type. This was in 2016 so there weren't really (and still aren't really) any good videos on using glyphs app. Basically through trial and error I learned how to get my letters into something fully functional!
Today and the future

I am the Tenant Coordinator at Shipt Tower. We are planning a farmers market the week of Earth Day. The market is for our tenants and anyone in the area wanting to shop local vendors. We are having the event on April 19 from 10 am – 1 pm. We will be promoting the event and your business to nearby buildings as well. Please let me know if you would be interested in joining us or if you have any questions. There is no cost for vendors. You will need to bring your own table to set up your booth. We plan to have the set up outside if weather permits, if not we will be located in our lobby. We would love for you to be able to attend this year! Let me know if you would be interested.
